A very important issue for new players is how to open the play. This subject is discussed 1000s of times by almost all poker pros.
However although almost every poker player has his unique poker style, most of them aggree, that a new player will improve if he follows the steps I will describe here.
When you play Texas Hold Em, you usually sit on a 9 or 10 handed table. We can devide the table into 3 main parts - early players, middle players and late players. The early part of the table are the first three players on a 9 handed table, the middle part are the middle 3 players and the late part are….. yes I know you got it :) the late part are the late 3 players. You count immer starting with the player on the immediate left of the dealer button.
You will almost always need much stronger hand to call or raise in early position in comparison to late position. I will not discuss why right now.
Starting hands for early position are: AA, KK, QQ, JJ, AKs, AKo, AQs
Starting hands for middle position are: AA, KK, QQ, JJ, AKs, AKo, AQs, AJs, AQo, TT, (99)
Starting hands for late position are: AA, KK, QQ, JJ, AKs, AKo, AQs, AJs, AQo, TT, 99, 88, 77, AJo, ATs
Starting hands for the button are: all the above hands but you can mix up some suited connectors and small pairs, as well as hands as bad as KJo, KTs, QTs
